Less than a month away for the NBA regular season to begin, and betting lines on who will win the regular season MVP are already heating up. Of course, a lot of things could change from now to the season tip-off, reason why it is important to pay attention to any detail in order to stay sharp in this volatile business. Especially, when the lines are moving up and down.
Between NBA fans, you will hear about the usual favorites like Stephen Curry, Le Bron James, and Kevin Durant. However. But there are some interesting names standing out early that are worth taking into consideration. Names such as Draymond Green and Chris Paul are likely mentioned, and others like Damian Lillard and Kawhi Leonard are found between the favorites as well.
Nonetheless, major books all over the world have surprised many, setting Russell Westbrook as number one favorite to become this regular season MVP. Handicappers probably have plenty of reason to consider him the number one favorite and today; we shall go over some of them.
The Chase For The MVP Award
Certainly, it is pretty early, the pre season games, Canadian Series and Global games are still coming up and injuries or even last minute roster moves that could change significantly how the forecast is looking today, but it is always interesting comparing how sports experts and handicappers feel about the 2016-2017 season and its MVP.
What is there to say that hasn’t been said before. Even though he is no youngster, LeBron still has plenty to give to the sport. Last year, LeBron averaged 25.3 points per game on 52% shooting from the field. Good enough for 4th place in player efficiency ratings behind Westbrook, Durant, and Curry. Nonetheless, he was still able to accomplish what seemed impossible at the time, turning over the series and bringing the championship back to Cleveland.
LeBron wasn’t part of team USA in The Olympics, so he had enough time to rest and heal up. Therefore, we can expect a fresh, and motivated Lebron James for this upcoming season.
On the quick look anyone would bet on Curry for MVP. He just happen to won his second straight award last year. However, Curry seems to lose power, as the season gets closer to the end. Maybe last season was the most dramatic. Curry ranked first in player efficiency ratings. The team played almost flawless the entire season, but they lose grip at the worst moment and let the championship slip away.
Another problem for Curry, but probably good for Golden State, is the fact that he will be sharing the court with no one else, but also MVP contender Kevin Durant. So, it is quite possible that this two will be stealing voters’ love from each other.
In some books, he is tied with Curry, in some others with Lebron. In some others, he is all by himself, but according to line makers, right now Russell Westbrook is number one favorite for MVP. We all know Westbrook is a master achieving a triple double. However, in order for him to win the MVP, he needs to increase his numbers and keep them high the entire season. Last year, he averaged 23.5 points, 10.4 assists, and 7.8 rebounds per game and with Kevin Durant and Serge Ibaka out of the way, he might just be able to do it. In fact, many handicappers predict that this could be Westbrook’s best season.
There is a lot of talent out there and it would take forever if we go over all the NBA players who actually have a chance to win the regular season MVP, but we need to at least mention: Draymond Green, who continues to prove what he can bring to the court. Chris Paul, one of the best point guards in the league and he is now fully recovered from any injury. Blake Griffin and Kawhi Leonard are strong contenders for the MVP award as well, and why not Damian Lillard, who keeps improving every time he enters the court.
We have many great players with different game styles to choose from. What is sure is that this upcoming 2016-2017 NBA season is going to be great.
